In ANSYS Release 8.1, the temperature is assumed to vary linearly through each layer. For example consider an element with 2 layers with a temperature of 0 F specified for the bottom of the bottom layer, a temperature of 10 F specified for the top of the bottom layer (which is also bottom of top layer), and a temperature of 100 F specified for the top of the top layer. The temperature through the thickness of the bottom layer is assumed to vary linearly from 0 F to 10 F, and the temperature through the thickness of the top layer is assumed to vary linearly from 10 F to 100 F.
