Are there any examples of using the GAP and FSLIDE features of COMBIN40 elements?
Yes, please see the attached ANSYS 10.0 SP1 example. The model consists of a single COMBIN40 element. The order of the nodal connectivity determines how the element will behave, based on the nodal coordinate system. In this example, three cases were analyzed: 1) no initial gap, 2) an initial gap, and 3) an initial interference. In all three, a cut-off value (FSLIDE) of 10 force units was included. The results seem to make sense. In the first case (no initial gap), FSLIDE is reached at 0.1 displacement units (10 = 100 * 0.1). For the next case (0.05 gap), node 2 must move 0.25 units before the element stiffness kicks in. For the last case, (0.05 initial interference), there is already a preload built in, so a very short travel distance reaches the FSLIDE value in the element.
