Workbench freezes or crashes during intensive graphics operations (Slice plane, edit plane, etc.). Do you have any suggestions for troubleshooting this problem?

The problem is most likely related to graphics.

- Run the DirectX diagnostic program to conveniently provide a detailed listing of the graphics and system configuration.
Start > Run > dxdiag.exe
DirectX Diagnostic Tool dialog appears
Save All Information > DxDiag.txt
If requesting ANSYS Technical Support for this problem, please include the DxDiag.txt file.

- Download and install the latest driver from the manufacturer's website.

Driver Installation Hints
- "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.
- Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.
- Before installing new drivers, make sure you uninstall all existing display drivers from the Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

- In the Windows Display Properties dialog - Hardware Acceleration is set to "Full" 32-bit color depth.

- Check the Computer manufacturer's website for updated motherboard/chipset drivers.
Usually these will include a setup program that is easy to install.
Occasionally, motherboard/chipset drivers do not get installed correctly when the Operating System is loaded from a "master" image (like in large companies)
If these drivers are not installed correctly, this can cause problem with graphics.

- Some card have an upgradeable BIOS. Check the graphics card manufacturer's website for updated Graphics Card BIOS.
Install an updated version if available.

- Check the Computer manufacturer's website for updated motherboard BIOS.
Usually these will include a setup program that is easy to install.

- In the System BIOS, disable Hyper-Threading.

- In the System BIOS, ensure that the default display adapter is set to the correct type, AGP or PCI or PCI-E, etc.

- Inside the computer itself, make sure the Video Card (and other interface cards) are seated correctly.
It may help to remove and reinstall them to be sure.

- If the graphics card is separate, consider swapping the card with one from another machine.

- Even if the latest driver already appears to be installed, it may also help to remove/reinstall the graphics driver once again following the hints mentioned above.
