The meaning of MPC184 keyopt(2) was changed rather significantly between 9.0 and 10.0, with the result that some legacy input from 9.0 no longer runs correctly in 10.0. Can't the software developers keep the existing keyopts and just add to the end of them without changing the order? At least then our historical files would continue to run. Please could an explanation be given as to why the 2D option was dropped and why the actual use of the keyoption was changed?

We agree that it is very important to support our customers¿ legacy input, and normally we do not consciously implement changes that we know will cause problems with legacy models. In this...

Class 3 Error

SYMPTOM:
When attempting to use particle vertex variables, for example in CEL expressions or in User Fortran, the solver crashes or produces unphysical results.

PROBLEM:
This is due to a bug in the CFX Solver when the particle vertex mass flows are calculated for particles that are injected at Wall type boundaries. General particle injection regions (e.g. specified through User Fortran), and particles injected at boundaries other than Walls ar

Question:

We have used the "Paint" option and placed thermal SHELL131 elements over SOLID70 elements to act as a thin insulator coating with a 1-layer thickness. It is desired to use SURF152 surface effect elements on the exposed outside face of the SHELL131 elements. After ESURF meshing the SURF152 elements on the same nodes as were used for the SHELL131 elements, we find that convective loads on the SURF152 elements are acting on the face of the underlying solid element, not the exposed face of the SHELL131 element. Can you tell me what is going on?

Answer:

The problem here is the identification of the degree of freedom. The degree of freedom for the SURF152 is TEMP; the degree of freedom that the user is attempting to connect to is TTOP.

The SHELL131 element has 32 degrees of freedom, all of them temperature. To differentiate them, they were given names like T1, T2,...,TTOP and TBOT. When you use the PAINT option for the SHELL 131, ANSYS changes the degree of freedom from TBOT to TEMP so that the degree of freedom matches the solid element that the SHELL 131 is painted onto. When the user adds the SURF152s with the TEMP degree of freedom, those elements are effectively attached to the bottom of the SHELL131 where the degree of freedom is TEMP. The element itself doesn't know anything about position in space other than through the nodes.

The workaround for this problem is somewhat involved. It will be necessary to create a second area with new lines and keypoints and to mesh that second area with SURF 152 elements with new node number and element numbers. It will then be necessary to connect the SURF152 nodes to the SHELL131 nodes. Constraint equations may be the only answer here since most other coupling options (elements like LINK33 or CP command) have only the TEMP degree of freedom. The constraint equation would look like

CE,NEXT,0,node1,TEMP,1,node2,TTOP,-1

It will likely be convenient to create the mesh of the SOLID70 areas fi

Q. Where can I find an example of a Thermal Stress calculation using ANSYS Multiphysics and CFX. I want CFX to solve a Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis and ANSYS to solve for the resulting thermal and pressure stresses in the structure. The assumption is that the deformation of the structure has a negligible effect on the flow field.

A. Such an example, using the ANSYS Multifield Solver, is attached. Since the CHT problem is solved in CFX, the a Multiphysics license is needed in order to transfer the temperatures.

QUESTION:

Do you have examples demonstrating a method for calculating net flux passing through a coil? My objective is to use time varying flux in a harmonic response or transient analysis to calculate induced EMF in a sense coil of an eddy current probe.

ANSWER:

The attached zip file contains a 30 degree sector of a simple air coil modeled 2 ways:

1) SOLID97 MVP (flux calculated with surface integral of B_normal and also with FLUXV.MAC)
2) SOLID117 edge flux formulation (flux calculated with surface integral of B_normal - FLUXV.MAC is not applicable).

In both models, the coil is current fed (BFE,,JS...) and has a uniform current density over its cross section, just as a stranded coil would. In a sensor application, the sense coil current will be negligible so no current excitation should be defined in it. Coil current excitation should instead be defined in the drive coil.

Q. I am getting some strange differences between slice and sample plane behaviour, particularly on points 'outside' the domain, in Post in CFX-10.

A. There is now an Interpolation Tolerance in Post that means sample points considered just outside the flow domain are snapped to the domain boundary (and therefore assume the boundary value). The tolerance defaults to 5% of the domain extent. If your domain is large compared to the geometry of interest that intersects your slice plane, the sample points might be snapped to a boundary (eg. parallel to the plane) when they shouldnt be. Hence they are displayed with non-zero values instead of being 'undefined'.
You can change the tolerance (or turn it off and revert to 5.7 behaviour by setting it to 0) in Edit > Options > Post.

I specified a Z-rotation constraint using remote displacement in WB 9.0. In WB, the remote displacement details show reaction values for all 6 DOFs. If I look at the results in Traditional ANSYS, the only reaction at the pilot node is MZ, as expected. Why does WB report these extra reactions for the other DOFs?

This is a known error for WB 9.0 that has been fixed in 10.0. The problem was that at 9.0, the program was getting the reaction using FSUM logic on the attachment geometry of the remote...

Q. If I have multiple versions of CFX installed on my machine, how can I control which versions show up in the CFX launcher?

A. If there are several versions of CFX on the system, they will each have their own installation directory. What shows up in the launcher will be a function of what in the "launcher directory". A typical location of this directory is as follows:

Program Files> Ansys Inc > CFX > CFX-5.7.1 > etc > Launcher

Each installation of CFX will have this directory, and the launcher will show all the versions that have this directory.

If you rename the directory Launcher to, say, Launcher1, it will not be seen by the launcher next time it comes up.

Question:

I cannot find information on the binary file that contains the view factors for a radiation calculation, file.vf. Is there any information available that would allow me to access the binary form of that file since the ASCII form does not have sufficient accuracy for the calculations that I am doing.

Answer:

The information contained on the file.vf in binary form is the same as the information in ASCII form. The only difference is in the format of the file. The ASCII form of the file may be read with any stardard text editor. The binary form of the file appears to be a standard ANSYS binary file that may be processed like any other ANSYS binary file. A user can access the binary information in two ways: dumping the file in ANSYS using the /AUX2 routine or writing an external program to read the file using the reader/writer routines documented in the Guide to Interfacing with ANSYS.

The binary file has an ANSYS Standard Hearder record that contains the standard information. This record is documented in the Guide, Section 1.1.2. Beginning at record 2, the view factors are written per enclosure per element. Or, in Fortran terms

DO II 1,Enclosure Number
DO JJ 1,Number of Elements
Write (N) (viewfactor(kk),kk=1,Number of Elements)
ENDDO
ENDDO

Each record contains the view factors from the current element face to the other faces in the enclosure. Records are written sequentially. Users should be able to use the BINSET function to open the file and BINRD8 subroutine to read the various records. The Guide includes several examples for reading ANSYS binary files.

Questions concerning this should be directed to ANSYS Technical Support.
