Why doesn't an ANSYS pipe model of a u-tube produce any reaction force? There should be end forces and the "u" should want to open up.

The ANSYS pipe elements are assumed to be capped by default. KEYOPT(8)=1 can be used to specify open ends.

How to define the damping in Component Mode Synthesis Analysis? There doesn't seem to be any provision for a damping matrix as with normal superelements.

The CMS superelements do not compute a damping matrix in ANSYS at 11.0. The damping can be applied to them in the use pass.

How could a PSD response analysis of a fuel tank, including fuel, be done?

In the PSD analysis below, a 0.5 inch thick steel container is modeled with SHELL63. Inside the container, a fluid is modeled with...

What does damping mean in a modal analysis?

It depends on the type of modal analysis:

1. In a QRDAMP modal analysis, MP,DAMP is material dependent "beta" damping (K matrix multiplier.) [Ref: Table 5.6 of...

Unigraphics UG NX models fail to attach into DesignModeler, however the same model attaches successfully into Simulation. Unigraphics runs correctly, and the plugin is confirmed to be installed correctly.

The user login name should not contain extended ASCII characters. (e with an accent, U with two dots above, etc). The UG-DM translator is different from Simulation, in that uses a direct Parasolid...

Why is Simulation making the modal prestressed for this model with no loads?

Some of the contact has "specified offset" requested in the advanced features. This can act as a load, so that is what Simulation is detecting. If this is changed to "adjust...

For a simple uniaxial compression test, the reported stresses are not continuous. It seems as though local unloading occurs. This is physically not correct. For parameters psi<1, the surface is not convex anymore! This is also unphysical. See attached PDF. Is this a code defect?

It is not a defect.
(1) Yes. Yield surface can be nonconvex at the ratios below some values. Consider Fig 4.11 of Theory Manual (with psi<0.80).
(2) Drucker's...

Does the Workbench 11.0 / 11.0 SP1 plugin provide support for SolidWorks 2008?

Informal testing and feedback from customers indicate that WB 11.0/11.0SP1 will work with SW2008 with exceptions as follows:

- In "Plugin" mode with CAD model open...

I created a test model to understand the sewing tolerance, which could be set inside the midsurface operation, but I could not find out how it should work. Could you please explain me how to use this tolerance?

The mid-surface feature works by first generating the mid-surface for each face pair individually. The thickness of the body for each face pair is also computed. Then, the next step is sewing. DM...

How can I write a JScript macro for Workbench Simulation that will update the tabular data of a pressure load?

Please see the attached example dsdb and macro. Examine the load in the tree before and after running the macro, which I tried to comment heavily.

Customer has a new XP x64 computer. They have loaded SolidWorks 2007 on it and now ANSYS V11 SP1. ANSYS works fine and the interface to ProE works fine. However, the interface for SolidWorks does not appear in SolidWorks when trying to use the interface. The Geometry Interface for SolidWorks was chosen during setup and there were no errors during install. What needs to be done to show the ANSYS interface?

Open SolidWorks and go to: Tools->Add-Ins. Check ANSYS Interface so that it is loaded when SolidWorks starts up.

Q.I 'm trying to solve a heat transfer problem with Solid domains, but it's giving unrealistic temperatures and generating heat where there shouldn't be any. What could be wrong?

A. The most likely root of the problem is the domain interface connections. Rather than leave them at automatic, they should be changed to GGI.

Making an exact duplicate of my model in another region of space reduced the initial contact stiffnesses reported by the CNCHECK,DETAILS command. Why?

The algorithm that calculates the initial contact stiffness for the 17X elements considers the model size. As the model gets larger, it becomes more difficult to solve due to the increase in...

If a run, which includes periodic boundaries, also has mesh adaption, any new nodes that the refiner creates at a periodic boundary may be unattached at the corresponding periodic boundary. Class 3 Error

SYMPTOM:
If an Additional Variable is transferred across a Fluid-Solid Interface, then the Additional Variable is not correctly conserved in a case with turbulent flow. This can be seen by inspecting the "Boundary Flow and Total Source Term Summary" section of the CFX-Solver Output File, where the amount of Additional Variable leaving the solid side of the Fluid-Solid Interface is not equal to the amount of Additional Variable entering the fluid side of the Fluid-Solid Interface.

In addition, for both laminar and turbulent flow, the hybrid values of the Additional Variable calculated by the solver on the Fluid-Solid Interface are incorrect.

This only affects cases with GGI interfaces. It should also be noted that the transfer of Additional Variables between fluid domains and solid domains is a beta feature and cannot be set up in CFX-Pre unless beta features are enabled.

PROBLEM:
The solver does not correctly calculate the Additional Variable flux into the control volume on the fluid side of the Fluid-Sol

Is LS-DYNA fully supported by ANSYS 11.0 SP1 on Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit?

Yes, ANSYS/LS-DYNA is supported on Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit.

I don't understand the sensitivity plots in DesignXplorer. They are displayed using positive and negative numbers in both bar and pie charts. What is the significance of the sign and the number?

SYMPTOM:
When restarting a moving mesh calculation that uses the Second Order Transient scheme, initial jumps in the solution (e.g. pressure) may be apparent. the size of the jump is problem dependent.
