Verification Manual Input Data 121 (VM121) contains a fully developed laminar flow problem with constant heat flux. On the basis of theory in that problem, Nusselt number will be 4.36 and corresponding heat transfer co-efficient will be 7344.4 w/m2-k. This theoretical result is discussed in the "Temperature Solution" section of VM121.

But heat transfer coefficient determined by ANSYS (PLNSOL,HFLM) ranges from ~100 - ~600 and averages about 250 W/m^2C, which of course is far lower.

Why is this so? Is the FLOTRAN-calulated result incorrect?

From the equations in VM121 write-up:

H = Nu*k/D = (4.36)(8.54 W/mC)/(0.005m) = 7450 W/m^2C

The FLOTRAN-calculated film coefficient ranged from ~100 - ~600...

What advection and transient scheme should I use for a DES simulation?

I ran a multiple sequence analysis and have results available. I would like to save figures for my Report which show results from each load step. However when I insert a figure in a result then change the sequence number in the graphics window the result and the figure update. What can I do to get figures from each sequence?

For each sequence that you wish to capture in a figure, insert a result object. For example, if you have a 3 sequence model and want the stresses from each load step you would insert the stress...

By default, the outer edge of the model is highlighted on a Q-slice plot. Is it possible to turn off the outline.

Yes. In ANSYS Release 9.0, you can turn of the edge outline using /GLINE,,-1. See example...

RESOLUTION:

This is a known error in CFX 5.7 and CFX 5.7.1, but it's harmless . It just means that it's failed to create the default hosts.ccl file. You should be able to use all modules of CFX without any problems.

The hosts.ccl file is used to setup distributed parallel runs. Since it failed to create a default hosts.ccl file, please refer to CFX Help pages for more info on how to create one manually. Help>Master Contents> Solver Manager>Contents>Using Solver Manager> Setting Up and Running a Parallel Run.

How does Workbench handle multiple loadcase in the calculations in the Fatigue Tool. In particular, when I insert a solution combination into the problem, how is each load case handled fatigue-wise? I.e., how is the load set for each used, particularly when the loading type(reversed, zero-based etc.) is different in each load environment. What if one load is present all the time, like gravity?

At the present time (Release 9.0), the fatigue tool calculations in each Environment are independent and are based upon the specifications of that environment. Under the details of the Fatigue...

I have several questions related to swelling.

1. According to the documentation, swelling is only available as a User Programmable Feature (UPF), USERSW. Is that true?

2. Is USERSW limited to isotropic materials?

3. Is USERSW available for SOLID226/227. If not, can it be made so?

I'm running a transient simulation in a closed system (no inlets or outlets).
I've noticed that if my fluid is modeled as an ideal gas, the initial condition that I use for pressure is applied. I verify this by checking the pressure in the backup file at 0 iterations.
If the fluid is incompressible, however, I notice that the initial condition I set for pressure is not applied. If I set a constant initial condition, that condition is replaced by a zero field for initial pressure. If I set a variable initial condition for pressure, my initial guess is shifted by some amount.
What's going on?

Q. I am using inches as my working unit in Inventor 9. When I open the model in CFX-Mesh, it appears that the model was changed into Centimeters. I thought that CFX-Mesh did not do any units conversions. What happened?

A. CFX Mesh did not convert the units. The user can choose the working units in Inventor 9, but that does not control how Inventor stores the model. It will always do that in Centimeters. So that's what CFX-Mesh reads.
