What can I do to reduce the morphing failures I am getting in
a pull-down analysis with ANSYS 8.1?

There are three techniques you can try:

1. Fix displacements of air that isn't moving.

2. Use area weighted morphing keyo(1)=1 and refine
the mesh in areas where morphing failure is occurring.

3. Try the undocumented morphing stiffness factor:
keyopt(2)=1. With this option real constant 2 is a factor on the
morphing stiffness. Note, morphing stiffness only affects morphing,
not force calculation so you could use 1e6 if you wanted to without
affecting the solution. It might slow convergence, however.
