Why does ls970.exe crash when running from the Launcher?

ls970.exe

ls970.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

There is a defect for this issue and we are planning to have it fixed for ANSYS 10.0 Service Pack 1.

The problem is caused by certain messages being displayed in the LS-DYNA output window.
So far, we've just seen the problem when licensing-specific messages are displayed.

The workaround is to set the following system variable:

System Variable= ANS_FLEXLM_EXPWARN_DAYS
Variable Value= 0 (zero)

The negative to this is that the expiration warning won't be seen. For commercial keys, the user can also set this environment variable, but he/she will still have a problem during the last 7 days because, for non-demo keys, we always display the expiration date for the 7 days before it expires regardless of whether this environment variable is set.

For commercial TECS keys, there will probably also be the problem of the TECS expiration date warning 45 days prior to the TECS expiration date. There is no way to turn this off.

It's possible that there may be other licensing-related situations that can cause this abort as well.
