Why is the source field computed by a SOURC36 coil a function of the SOLID117 mesh?
The ability to use SOURC36 with SOLID117 was added within the last couple years. In the past, SOURC36 was only used with the scalar potential elements, e.g., SOLID96. In this case a source field, Hs, was computed based on the Biot-Savart calculation and as you say, it was exact and independent of the mesh quality. When a SOURC36 element is used with SOLID117 the source current is converted into an element current density. The closed form Biot-Savart calculation is not used. This approach is dependent on mesh quality. For an analysis without iron, it would be more accurate and efficient to do the analysis in ANSYS with SOLID96. Note that portions of a coil outside the mesh would be ignored completely. |
