When importing a simple IGES file in ANSYS 11.0 sp1, with the option 'defeature model,' a memory error occurs on 32-bit windows systems. Normal default import does work. On a 64bit Windows the import of the IGES file, no error appears but cannot use NUMMRG.

This model requires more scratch space than available. ANSYS has
currently allocated 410 MB and was not able to allocate enough
additional memory in order to proceed. Please increase the virtual
memory on your system and/or increase the work space memory and rerun
ANSYS. Problem terminated.

This behavior of de-featuring IGES running out of memory on 32-bit Windows PCs was reported as defect 43168 during development of ANSYS Release 11.0. It was determined that it is not fixable.

The recommended workaround is to de-feature the model in a CAD system then import it using the no de-feature method or import it using Workbench and create the mesh there then either solve in Simulation or write an ANSYS input file.

Another option is to use a different CAD file such as Parasolids. It is a known limitation that if your model uses the de-feature style database that you cannot use any NUMMRG commands nor can you issue any commands that create entities of the no de-feature style (this includes the K, L, A, and V commands).

Section 6.1 of the "ANSYS Modeling and Meshing Guide" describes the various differences between de-feature and no de-feature methods.
