In ANSYS Release 11.0, what coordinate system is used by the PRSECT and PLSECT commands to report linearized stresses?


The coordinate system used by the PRSECT and PLSECT commands to report linearized stresses depends on the dimension of the model.

For axisymmetric models, the linearized stresses are always reported in the section coordinates (SX along the path, SY normal to the path, and SZ hoop direction). For an axisymmetric model, the linearized stresses are not affected by the RSYS setting.

For a 2-D planar or 3-D model, the linearized stresses are reported in the active results coordinate system (RSYS).

Attached are two simple test cases that demonstrate this behavior for an axisymmetric and a 3-D model. Both test cases have a cylindrical model with two stress classification lines (one horizontal and one at a 60-degree angle). A local coordinate system (LOCAL,11) is rotated 90 degrees so that X is now Y and vice versa. The output demonstrates that RSYS,11 affects the 3D results, but does not affect the axisymmetric results.
