I found in the manual that the ELBOW command will convert straight PIPE289 elements to ELBOW290 "where it is beneficial". I would like some more information on this: What are the conditions for when it is considered beneficial and elements are converted?

Under the following conditions, pipe to elbow transitioning will done:

1) A straight pipe289 element is next to a curved pipe289 element
2) The section ID's of the 2 adjacent elements are the same
3) The tangents of the 2 elements at the shared node are within 1 degree.

When a transition region is determined, the algorithm marches out along
the straight region and converts 289's to 290's until a distance of 2 pipe
diameters is exceeded.

The curved regions will typically have cross-section deformation. We transition
these elements so the cross-section deformation can continue into the adjacent straight region.
