What is the maximum number of LINES and AREAS allowed in ANSYS?

In Release 10.0, the maximum number of LINES and AREAS is 9,999,9999 (10e6 minus 1). It is unlikely that you can ever reach those limits without exceeding capacity of the hardware. The limit is...

Is it possible to calculate independent safety factors for different portions of a model?

In Release 10.0, it is possible to caculate independent safety factors for different portions of a...

Can the ISTRESS command be used with the MFS?

In ANSYS Release 10.0, the MFS does not support the ISTRESS command, because it is not written to the field command files. You can force the MFS to recognize the ISTRESS by editing the...

Is it possible to change the boundary conditions between the prestressing analysis and the modal analysis in a pre-stressed modal analysis.

Is it possible to *GET the nodal stress values from CYCPHASE?

In Release 10.0, it is not possible to *GET the nodal stress values from CYCPHASE. CYCPHASE only provides the maximum values.

Why am I getting different stresses at the connection points when I support
a mass with RBE3 and MPC based contact?

Unless weighting factors are specified, RBE3 distributes forces equally between<br>all the nodes. In a mesh with higher order elements the mid-side nodes should be<br>weighted higher....

Why does RPSD abort in ANSYS 9.0 when I leave ANSYS after solution and
the reenter to do the postprocessing?

This is an error, Defect 29585. It is fixed in ANSYS 10.0. It occurs whenever<br>the user leaves ANSYS after the PSD solution and then reenters to do the RPSD<br>in POST26. It...

Q. Models with constraint equations will cause ANSYS 9.0 and 10.0 to crash when you execute a run statistics macro with the following commands:

/RUNSTAT
RALL

If you delete the constraint equations, the run statistics procedure works fine.

**************

A. This was a code defect that has been corrected for 11.0 production release.

Q. Is it possible to create a rigid-flex contact pair in Workbench?

A. Not directly. You can do it with the following procedure.

1. Create the geometry feature intended to be rigid as a surface entity in the Cad package or in DM.
2. Create an asymmetric flex-flex contact pair, designating the surface entitiy from step 1 as the target.
3. Apply constraints to the target side.
4. Use a command object to delete the underlying SHELL elements on target side just prior to issuing the SOLVE.

Note:
This procedure will create postprocessing problems without adding the environment variable "allow null results" (=1) .
The only advantage to doing this is with a large assembly model including large deflection contact and material nonlinear (i.e. hyperelastic) applications.
In these cases, the above procedure will usually enhance convergence and improve runtime.

Enhancement request #41460 has been filed to include rigid to flex contact technology in a future workbench release.

When trying to output a cfx mesh (hex mesh) from ICEM, why does a file chooser popup appear asking the user to select a .uns file
which does not appear to exist.

The cfx mesh output filter requires an unstructured mesh format to be able to generate a CFX mesh.<br> An unstructured mesh can easily be generated by ICEM from the structures...

After working in CFX-Mesh on Windows XP for some time I get an error message which shuts down ANSYS Workbench.
The message is a windows error message:
"AnsysWB Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

A Windows error popup window should also report some details about the error such as the application name and the module name, eg:<br> AppName: ansyswbu.exe, ModName:...

At our support department we regularly receive workbench files without a notice in which version it is created.
For traditional ANSYS files one can use Notepad or Wordpad to see at the first line in which version the file was
created. Is there a way to see from the .dsdb or .agdb file in which version these files were created?

There is no similar way to do this for .dsdb file, but the .agdb file does have the version and build date<br>in ascii type in the file. Search for the string 'Design' and you will see...

What are the limits of ANSYS ED at 9.0?

There are limits on the maximum number of<br>geometric entities, nodes and elements. These can<br>be found in the location below:<br><a target=_blank...

Does ANSYS have a translator from ABAQUS to ANSYS?

Yes, FEModeler in Workbench can translate an ABAQUS<br>input file into an ANSYS .cdb file at 10.0.

How can I visualise in CFX-Post a phase pair variable like the slip velocity, the particle slip Reynolds number, etc..?

A lot of these variables are known to the solver during the run and are simply not stored in the res file. To make those available for postprocessing you can:<br>1. take a look at the...

When using the Pro-Engineer ICEM plugin to read in the tetin file the families or part names were created but no entities (surfaces, curves, points) were read in.

<br>This is how the plugin is designed to work. You need to read the tetin file into an existing Pro-Engineer model and not a new empty model.<br>The "Read Tetin" option...

I would like to check the mesh in my model at a location where the residuals are high. How can I view the mesh elements at that location?

You can do so by creating a volume (Create/Location/Volume). If you know the x,y,z coordinates of the location you want to investigate, you can create a volume with the option...

Q
I would like to compare the fields of pressure gradients between the results of two simulations. However, there is insufficient memory available on my machine to allow the comparison between two full res files using the interpolation tool in the CFX-Solver Manager. I cannot reduce the size of my res files as it is not possible to specify the pressure gradients as selected variables.

A
It is possible to perform the comparison in CFX-Post by using a frozen variable from the first res file, as follows:

1. Open your first res file in CFX-Post
2. Pick the Variables tab
3. Click on the 'Create New Object' icon and provide a suitable name for the variable you want to keep. Select OK
4. On the form select 'Frozen Copy' for the Method
5. Select the required gradient in the Copy From box (you will have to use the ''' to the right-hand side
6. Repeat 3.-5. as necessary.
7. Load in your second res file. On the Variables tab you will see that your created variables have been retained
8. You can now create new variables, the values of which are the differences between the components of pressure gradient in the new file and those saved as frozen copies from the old file.
9. Plot your new variables created in 8. to see the differences.

Can multiple CDREAD commands be used to import SHELL181 elements defined with REAL Constants and SHELL181 elements defined with SECTION IDs?

Yes, but you must be very careful that the REAL constant data is not ignored. According to the Elements Manual for Release 10.0, if a SHELL181 element references both REAL constant set data and a...

Q
How do I make a copy of a Designmodeler file WITH the accompanying CFX-Mesh file in Workbench?

A
1. If you have saved the project (the wbdb file) as well as the DesignModeler database (agdb) and the CFX-Mesh files (cmdb and cmdat), then you could copy the whole set of files to the new location. When you open the copied wbdb file, the paths to its family of files will be updated to the new location.

2. If you have not saved the project file, you can copy the other three files (agdb, cmdb and cmdat) files to the new location. You will find when you open the cmdb file that the associated geometry file shown on the Project Page is the original one. To change this:
1. Highlight the agdb file on the Project Page
2. On the left-hand side click on Edit Item>Find file
3. Browse the geometry (agdb) file you want
4. Update the geometry from within CFX-Mesh - go to the CFX-Mesh tab and update geometry, e.g. by right-clicking on geometry in the tree and selecting Update Geometry.

How do you plot the axial stresses in LINK10 elements?

In ANSYS Release 10.0, to find the axial stress in the LINK10 element, you use an ETABLE command. First select the LINK10 elements and then issue ETABLE,SAXL,LS,1. That command will store the...

1: In the Simulation fatigue module, how can you simulate a bending stress alternating about a preload stress? How can you store only the nodal results in a harmonic analysis?
