Q. I am solving a CHT problem in CFX with multiple domains connected with 1:1 interfaces. Near the interfaces I see temperatures that are physically unreasonable. What should I do?

A. Try changing the interface type to GGI. It has also been shown that resolving the temperature gradient near the interface with inflation layers will help.

If a user accidentally overwrites his valid license file with an expired license on UNIX, the license manager will not start, even after reinstalling the valid license.

Why doesn't my License Manager start?

You have to reinstall the valid license, and then either kill the lmgrd process, and then start the license manager again, or reboot if you have an boot_ansflex file set up.

I have created a def file under Windows and want to start it on Linux. The solver crashes with the following error message. What's wrong?

Q. I am doing a simulation in a high aspect ratio geometry (a tunnel) and would like to view plots along the tunnel in full length. However, it is very difficult to see the (thin) line of the tunnel using standard contour plots (for example). Is there a transformation to help in CFX-Post?

A. The simplest way would be to rotate the model so you are looking very obliquely at the tunnel. That is, almost looking straight down the tunnel but from slightly to one side. A better way would be to use a scaling. Generate the contour plot and then edit it and switch to the View tab. Near the bottom is the Apply Scale option, and you can check this on and apply a much reduced scaling in your tunnel axis direction. This way, any plots along the length of the tunnel would be squeezed up and easier to see. Also, if your tunnel is not planar you could scale it in the horizontal direction as well to make things easier.

Q. CFX appears to stop at the first opportunity saying a solver (or partitioner) "executable is required for this run, but none is available". The installation, however, appears to be correct.

A. It could be that you have a quite recent Opteron AMD64 machine and one of our programs is incorrectly identifying it as a K6. If this error is made, the solver tries to look for a different 32-bit executable, and hence does not find it within the 64-bit installation. This bug has been fixed in our Service Pack 1 for CFX-10. You can download it from the customer portal at http://www1.ansys.com/customer/ provided that you have the password.

A customer is trying to compress many .rst files in a row and all the resulting files but the last one are corrupted. Why is this?

It seems that the problem is that Ansys launches many threads and works on different .rst files in the same time and thus the files are corrupted.<br><br>The solution is to insert...

I am running a case on a Linux Opteron system in CFX 10.0. I notice that the solver manager output file window lags behind the residual monitor output on during the run. The output file is not continuously refreshed, but instead several timesteps will be updated at once. This makes it difficult to stop a run at a given point or tell exactly which iteration it is on.

I am preparing a conjugate heat transfer case in CFX 11.0. In my simulation there are coils of flat strips of copper separated by glass/epoxy insulation. Q. The inclusion of temperature dependent coefficients for TB,PRONY generates incorrect answers. This problem appears to be new to release 9.0 as the input works correctly at release 8.1. The program apparently can retrieve the correct coefficients, as indicated by the *GET command but the use of the coefficients to perform the analysis appears to use incorrect values. What is the resolution?

A. This was a class 3 error regarding the proper handling of temperature dependent viscoelastic relaxation data.
It has been corrected for 10.0 Service Pack A1 and 11.0.

Q. Why does an unconverged nonlinear buckling analysis produce the error message,"Error opening split file= file.rst**" ?
It only happens in /POST1 when you try to read in the last successfully converged substep saved to the rst file.
It is not a large model and no file splitting has actually occurred.

A. This was a code defect in 9.0 and 10.0 (Defect report 44059). It is fixed at 11.0. Problem was that once ANSYS could not bisect anymore, rather than exiting gracefully at that point we went onto the output pass. Since we had hit an error, we only wrote the displacements to the rst file and skipped the element results. We then went through the normal "abort" process where we wrote the 99999 unconverged solution (both displacements and stresses). If you went to postprocess this rst file, the last solution (99999) was fine; SET,PREV reads incomplete information that subsequently triggers the misleading error message.
The code fix is to make sure we exit gracefully in this case.
