I have a geometry that I am trying to mesh in CFX-Mesh. The largest dimension in my model is on the order of 5000 in model units, but
I have small faces with edge lengths on the order of 1 which I would like to resolve. I can create a surface mesh which appears to resolve the small faces well, but when I try to create a volume mesh, I get an error message which says that the surface mesh is intersecting.

What can be done?

Q. Some dsdb models, which originated in 10.0, will crash Simulation when the user tries to reopen them. They open fine in 11.0 beta.
What is the possible cause?

A. One possible cause of a crash is a DSDB file which has been saved while a CAD parameter is selected ("P") in the details window in a model with multi-body parts. This is a defect in the code that has been corrected for 10.0 Service Pack 1. The workaround is to save the dsdb model without cad parameters selected.

I set up a monitoring point for some variables in the CFX 10.0 solver. When I export in Post the same variables at the same location I end up with different values for my variables than those given in the solver manager. Why is that?

Can I create a plane in Post with fixed dimensions at an offset w.r.t. the origin? For instance, when I specify a YZ-plane with dimensions Y=1m, Z=1m, the plane is plotted centered about the XYZ origin. I would like to set the plane centered about Z=1m.

I am running a multiphase simulation with the particle model. I expect the area density to be related to the volume fraction and particle diameter by

A_int = 6 * volfrac / d

When I plot the area density in Post, I find that this is the case almost everywhere but for a few locations. Why is that?

The particle model is strictly only valid for continuous-disperse flows. The area density is clipped when the volume fraction of the disperse phase exceeds a maximum value, which by default is set...

The mesh generation program was unable to allocate enough memory.
That is memory that can be grabbed by a 'malloc' statement. In general
this will be a machine dependent combination of available real memory
and swap space. If in doubt, contact your systems administrator.

You will either need to:-

(1) Increase the size of the available hardware:

(a) Run on a machine that has more memory/swap space. OR

(b) You may be able to run the problem on this machine when there
are fewer processes running on it.

(2) Reduce the size of the problem.

SYMPTOM:
When trying to run the CFX-Solver in parallel on Windows using the MPICH version, the run fails with the following error:

Error 32, process 0, host VORTEX:

An error has occurred in cfx5solve:

The CFX-5 solver has terminated without writing a results file.

Running the PVM version of the solver, or running in serial mode, work as normal.

PROBLEM:
This problem is known to occur on some Windows machines running the Symantec Antivirus software. It appears that the creation of the mpi temporary file is delayed by the intervention of the antivirus process, and this causes the solver run to fail with what is essentially a timeout error.

QUESTION:

I have heard that the 3D magnetic vector potential (MVP) formulation used by SOLID97 fails to accurately predict the magnetic field at material interfaces across which there are large changes in magnetic permeability. This was the motivation for creating the edge flux potential formulation (SOLID117), which correctly predicts fields in such cases. However, a number of features available for SOLID97 (circuit coupling through CIRCU124, sliding interfaces via CEINTF, and companion infinite boundary elements) are not yet available for SOLID117. If I have an application requiring these features in a system with material interfaces, is there a workaround to correct the field error at material interfaces using SOLID97 so that I may use these features?

ANSWER:

An unsupported procedure has been known to work in at least some cases. A simple example (attached to this solution) in which a permanent magnet is placed along side a permeable bar is solved 4 different ways:

1) mdl02.inp: 3D MVP (SOLID97): field distribution and magnitude differs considerably from all other cases

2) mdl03.inp: SOLID117

3) mdl04.inp: SOLID98 magnetic scalar potential (MSP)

4) mdl02c.inp: SOLID97 using the workaround described below - field distribution and magnitude agrees well with cases 2 and 3. Input file calls macros mbdryMVP.mac and mbdryCP.mac.

The steps in the workaround may be summarized as follows:

a) rotate nodal degrees of freedom on the material interface so that the nodal x direction is normal to the interface
b) duplicate the iron mesh, discard the original mesh, retain the duplicate copy (no longer joined to the surrounding "air", but has duplicate nodes along the interface).
c) couple only tangential components (AY and AZ) of MVP on coincident pairs of nodes at the iron-air interface.

The attached presentation and input files illustrate that SOLID117 edge and SOLID98 MSP results agree and that SOLID97 results are incorrect unless the procedure summa

Question:

The MPINQR command seems to work with MPINQR(0,0,12) and MPINQR(n,0,1) but MPINQR(n,61,1) does not catch the non-linear material. The *get command doesn't appear to do something similar. Is there an alternative command that can do the same?

Answer:

There was a change in the way material properties are stored in the database at release 8.0. This was necessitated when the number of linear material properties became greater than 60. The nonlinear material properties now begin at 80 (release 10.0) but the MPINQR command will not identity the existance of nonlinear properties. The MPINQR command continues to function when the MAT value is 0 for the existance of nonlinear properties but will not identify anything associated with the nonlinear properties.

MPINQR was exposed to the command level for the purpose of creating the GUI and its use is not considered a part of standard ANSYS. That it no longer functions as previously is NOT an error and likely will not be corrected. The corresponding nonlinear inquire function, NLINQR, is not used by the GUI and is not exposed to the command level of the program. For the TB data that may exist in the database, the GUI uses the undocumented ITEM1 value of EXIST; a returned parameter value of 1 indicates that this particular nonlinear properties exists for this material. For example, if TB,BKIN had been defined for the problem, the *GET,CON,BKIN,1,EXIST would return a value of 1. Since the ITEM1 label of EXIST is also not documented, its use could change in the future but that is highly unlikely since ITEM1=EXIST is used by the MATERIAL GUI to obtain information about the nonlinear materials. Note that the ITEM1=EXIST only works for a single material. If the user is attempting to identify the highest material number used, he should continue to use the MPINQR for that purpose.

Question:<br><br>The MPINQR command seems to work with MPINQR(0,0,12) and MPINQR(n,0,1) but MPINQR(n,61,1) does not catch the non-linear material. The *get command doesn't...
